Fever 1793

So long time no post...anyway.

I read Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson.  I knew it would be a good book because Anderson is an amazing author.  I loved Wintergirls.  I hope to read more of her work.

This is a sad and gripping story of 14 year old Mattie living in Philadelphia during the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793. To say much more would give away a lot of spoilers.  Let's just assume the main character doesn't die.  That is all I can say.

Fever 1793 was very well written.  I learned a lot about the time period without too much preachiness. As my good friend says, historical fiction is the preachiest of the genres.

This completes my historical fiction challenge for 2012.  And there was much rejoicing!  I really enjoyed all the historical fiction that I read this year and I hope to continue to work it into my reading schedule.  There is just so much good fantasy and dystopia right now, it is hard to make room.

What should my 2013 reading challenge be?

  1. I think it is interesting when the main antagonist is an epidemic, so there's no group to really "blame." Maybe you should try alternate history? Terry Pratchett's "Nation" and Cynthia Voigt's Kingdom Quartet are both excellent.
